BIOGRAPHY

Born and raised in Montreal. I started singing at a very young age, recording demos and performing.
I also play the guitar, which I picked up recently, as well as vocal training.
I started off solo, writing my own music and lyrics, but realised the band was a better fit for me.
I enjoy all types of music, however rock and metal are my heart.

BIOGRAPHY

Born and raised in Montreal, I learned a bit of classical piano when I was very young then started guitar in the summer of '69 :) I've been doing shows since the early 1970s in various Montreal and Toronto bands, performing in venues such as the Colisée de Québec and le Café Campus, jamming with and learning from luminaries like Frank and Vince Marino (I was in a short-lived band with Vince in the 70s) and playing with people such as François Bourassa (a schoolmate) in Montreal, and in Toronto with players such as Jeff Healey, Tony Springer, Lisa Price, Lori Yates, etc., in clubs like Derringer's and the Upper Lip in the 80s. I've also recently played guitar for Miranie Morissette.

I've recorded 3 solo albums: The Hunt, Children of the Night, and The Mime.

I worked at music stores such as Steve's in Montreal, and I also had bit of a career as a published photographer with works in many magazines, newspapers and web sites; I shot shows of bands such as the Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, etc.,  and I also shot 2 albums for the band Anvil. I have a BA in History and Music Technology (2000) and a MLIS (2002) from McGill U where I taught in 2003 and 2005.

And amongst other interesting things, I'm doing a bit of translation for Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan's personal Web site, Caramba and I've also written a book on 438 TAC HEL Squadron of the RCAF!

ENDORSEMENTS

I am using a Godin guitars on AraPacis's live shows and on some tunes of our first CD and most tunes from our two latest ones! The Godin xTsa is a fantastic axe that I can use to get an acoustic or electric sound as well as drive my Roland GR Synth with - the triple combination is really incredible-sounding!

BIOGRAPHY

Arriving on the hot winds of the American midwest comes John Yates from Cincinnati, Ohio.

I grew up around a lot of musicians. Everybody I saw was either a singer or a player of some sort so I just figured I had better get with the program. It was a while before I realized that some people were actually not musicians. I imagine young farm kids must grow up thinking that everyone is a farmer in much the same way. Early on I was hearing mostly classical music. Dad was an organist and choir director and always had lots of music school kids singing for him and various symphony players coming around. It was a really amazing environment that I completely took for granted because I didn't know anything else. Early 20th century French organ music was what I got the most excited about, Marcel Dupré in particular. Tons of harmonic dissonance and dynamics. Not so different from a lot of heavy metal really, just in an earlier format. The piano compositions of Claude Debussy also got me excited for the same reasons. When I became a teenager, some of the other kids at school were playing guitars and drums and forming bands and I figured I knew enough to jump in as well. Once I could drive myself out of the city, I found some kids on a farm who were busy inventing heavy metal and trying real hard not to be farmers. They liked me and I joined their metal band. Playing the bass just clicked for me. I had a natural instinct for making a heavy sound that worked with the rest of the instruments. I figure it came from all of the loud organ music I heard when I was young. Or maybe it was those Herb Alpert records Dad was always playing...

Many miles and many great bands later, it's time to rock with AraPacis!
